All pupils in Key Stage 3 have the opportunity of learning French or German and can continue with either or both of these to GCSE. At KS3 pupils use the Tricolore Total course and in German we follow the Echo Express course which is supplemented by a variety of other materials. At Key Stage 4 the AQA course is followed in both language, with pupils continuing with the Tricolore Total course in French, whilst in German the curriculum is based on the Echo Higher GCSE course. Pupils are assessed in listening and reading skills at the end of the two year GCSE course at either foundation or higher level whilst the writing and speaking skills are assessed by means of controlled assessments, which can be done at any stage during the 2 year course. At A level we follow the AQA course for both languages. For French the ELAN course book is used and for German the Nelson Thornes AS/A2 course is followed and accompanied by online resources.
We encourage a broader interest in the culture of France and Germany at all levels to complement the language-learning skills through such means as subscribing to language magazines and borrowing films, books and music. We are also fortunate to have a French and German guest each year and sixth form students have weekly conversation practice with them. There is an international film club where we regularly show French and German films and there are trips organised for both languages. We have a German exchange with a grammar school in Koenigswinter (first established in 2011-2012) as well as a sixth form trip to Berlin every other year (to take place next in July 2013). The next French homestay trip to the magnificent city of Paris takes place in the school year 2012-2013.
