At the end of the exam season, when Year 11 have finished their final exam, Year 10 step up to the mark and take on a range of leadership roles. Last week I highlighted the students that supported the PE Primary School Festival. This week, I would like to acknowledge the work undertaken by the Language Leaders who supported the two-day primary festival at the start of last week. Foodbank

On a similar theme, our Year 10 are also running a foodbank collection this week for Scunthorpe Foodbank. If you would like to donate any jars or tins, then please ask your son or daughter to bring them into School and donate to the students manning the stall in the main yard. Here is a picture of day one’s collection. Thank you to Mrs Leaning for arranging the event.

Warhammer

I tweeted this news earlier in the week, but it is worth celebrating again. Our Warhammer team won The School League Final of the School’s Warhammer Alliance in the Age of Sigmar competition. As well as the team prize, Joe Wilkinson won best general and Jack Mallinsonwon the award for being most honourable. The team also won the quiz. Zak Morgan andDakota Sylvan were the other members of the team. Thank you to Mrs Donoghue for her enthusiasm and commitment to the team. They would not have reached the finals without her stalwart support.

Newlands and Language weekend

Seventy-five Year 7 students headed off to the Newlands Centre near Keswick on Friday last for their annual activity weekend. The group were treated to some glorious weather, activities such as canoeing, ghyll scrambling, high ropes and climbing, as well as the first half of the England v Panama game. Thank you to the following staff who gave up their weekend: Mrs Sharp, Mr Robinson, Mrs Ellerby, Mr Hargreaves, Mr Frost, Mr Ward, Mr Thompson, Fraülein Zeugner, Mrs Glentworth and Mr Jolly. On Sunday, the Year 8 Languages Activity weekend departed for the Yorkshire Dales. Staff are taking 33 students to Halton Gill Bunk Barn where they will be fully immersed in French and German until Sunday late afternoon. Dr Wilton has worked very hard to put together a low cost and engaging opportunity for students. I would like to thank him and his team of Mr Holland, Miss Turner, Mrs Bradbury, Fraülein Zeugner, Mrs Cooke and Mr Cooke for giving up their weekend to support the students’ learning and to do the cooking.

Arkwright Scholarship

Congratulations to three Year 11 students who have been awarded a prestigious Arkwright Scholarship. The award’s aim is to identify, nurture and to inspire future leaders in engineering and computing. James BushbyAnna Carter and Guy Lyons will have the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the curriculum during the course of their scholarship by working with sponsors. I am sure they will want to thank the D&T department of Mr Dobson, Mr Birch and Mr Hutson for their support.
