On 13th March, eighteen Year12 students set out on a poignant battlefields trip to France and Belgium as part of their A Level English Literature studies. A number of impressive and thought-provoking venues were visited, including the Menin Gate at Wipers (Ypres), the preserved trenches at Newfoundland Park, the underground ‘City’ at Wellington Quarry deep beneath the streets of Arras and the resting place of Wilfred Owen, arguably our most celebrated war poet. The highlight for many on the trip was the playing of the Last Post by Rebecca Jex at Thiepval Monument. We are exceptionally grateful to our guide, David and our driver, Darren for their expertise and support over what proved to be a very intense and emotional few days.
