Gold DofE Assessed 2014

A number of Caistor Grammar students travelled to The Lake District last weekend to undertake their Gold assessed expedition. The expedition consists of 4 days of walking totalling up to 60 miles. At the end of each day they make camp and cook their food. The students need to be completely self-sufficient, carrying everything they need for the entire expedition, water being the only exception.

The route they follow had been planned by them and during the expedition they were completely on their own. Supervisors were watching their progress but this was done remotely enhancing their sense of independence.

After a hearty meal and a good night’s sleep, the expedition started early on Saturday morning. The 4 groups packed everything away and after a briefing by their assessors they set off. The weather was kind and day one was completed in bright sunshine. Day 2 was more challenging as they climbed higher into the hills. The height brought rain, hail and low cloud but they all pushed on to the next campsite. Day 3 was the most challenging day as their route took them over Helvellyn, at 950 metres it is the second highest peak in England. This proved to be a very challenging but immensely rewarding conclusion to the third day. A well deserved night’s rest brought the last day. Weary legs carried the groups the length of Ullswater to the finishing Point at Pooley Bridge. At the end all the previous days’ pain was forgotten and replaced with a well deserved sense of achievement.

Twenty three students successfully completed the expedition and this is the highest number of students to complete at one time for a number of years. These students should feel very proud of their achievement and they have moved one step closer to completing their Gold Award.

Many thanks to all the volunteer assessors and supervisors who helped with the expedition.
