Headmaster’s Letter 2nd February 2018

Posted on 2nd February 2018

This time next week, our French Homestay trip and annual ski trip will be well on their way to their destination. These trips are well supported by teachers and school volunteers. Friendships are forged and students have the chance to experience a wide range of cultural opportunities that extend beyond School. Their memories of these trips stay with them for a long time. Thank you to my colleagues who are giving up a significant part of their half-term to make these trips possible. These are: Mr Holland, Mrs Bradbury, Mr Sunter, Mrs Sharp, Mrs Glentworth, Mrs Southwick, Mr Shepherd, Mr Robinson, Mrs Marris, Mr Clark, Mr Maxwell and Mrs Noel-Hiles.

A great deal of time goes into organising these trips – risk assessments, passports checked, arrangements made with host families, etc. Parents complete new forms for their son/daughter and details are updated accordingly. It appears that some of the information that we have on our central database is different to that which parents provide us with when the paperwork is being completed for trips. Please can parents ensure that they keep school records up to date by contacting us as soon as email addresses, telephone numbers or addresses are changed. Equally, once a commitment is made to a trip, please contact the trip leader if you need to withdraw your child from the visit. Withdrawal should only occur in exceptional circumstances.

We had a very well attended Harry Potter evening yesterday. The Old Hall became a mini-Hogwarts for over 40 of our Year 7 students. This superb event, now in its second year, is the brainchild of Librarian Mrs Jago. Thank you to her, Mrs Clarke, Mrs Buck and Mr Harris who supported. A special mention should go to our Year 9 Literacy Leaders who created the resources and prizes – this evening can only be achieved with all their support. There was even a Sorting Hat.

Also on Thursday, we had our Intermediate Maths Challenge. Results will be published soon. Next week, our senior team will be travelling to London for the final of the Senior Maths Challenge at Westminster Hall. I wish them the best of luck in a competition where we do fairly well up against some very tough competitors. If this were not enough, our Dungeons and Dragons teams have reached the national schools semi-finals in Nottingham next month.

The School Friends continue to do superb work for us. Plans are well under way for the Race Night on Friday 9 March, after half-term. They are looking for eight race sponsors for race night. Each race sponsor will pay a minimum donation of £25. If anyone would like to donate a prize – for example bottle of wine or something. All names will be credited in the race card, and sponsors will be able to give a narrative about their businesses in the race card. Please contact the chair of the Friends, Mrs Elaine Hughes ( if you would like to discuss sponsorship further.

We are now recruiting for examination invigilators for the summer. If you are interested, please look on the School website in the vacancies section. Please recommend this to someone who might be interested.

With best wishes,
