There will be some new teachers in some key pastoral roles at the start of next half term. Students have been informed over the course of the year but now that all the changes have been shared with students, I can now write to parents. Mrs Wolseley, who has filled the role of Senior Teacher and our Designated Safeguarding Lead is stepping down from the latter to concentrate on her role as Head of Classics at the end of this half-term. Mrs Wolseley has worked closely with students and their families through difficult situations. Her calm and objective view on what to some might be a crisis has helped steady some troubled waters. Her determination to see students overcome difficulties and flourish at School is outstanding. Mrs Clarke, currently Head of Middle School, will become the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Senior Teacher from June 1. Mrs Clarke’s promotion means that Mrs Ellerby, (PE), will start as the new Head of Middle School on that same date.
In the Upper School (Years 10 and 11), Mr Dobson is stepping down at the end of this half-term. His impact upon the Upper School has been considerable. With almost military precision, he has coordinated many year groups through the trials and tribulations of GCSEs with compassion, empathy and the occasional Leicester City analogy. He informed me of his wish to step down at the end of last academic year. He offered me ‘up to a year’ to find a new Head of Section and I took him at his word. I am delighted (as are the students) that he agreed to see our current Year 11 through to study leave. Mr Davey (English) will be taking on the role from June 1. I am sure you will wish Mrs Clarke, Mrs Ellerby and Mr Davey all the best in these key roles.
General Data Protection Regulation
Accompanying today’s letter is a privacy notice for parents relating to the way in which we use, store, process and pass on (where we have to) student data. The General Data Protection Regulation comes into force on May 25, 2018, and this privacy notice outlines students’ rights. (Parents will receive a notice for their data before half-term). A different copy of the notice will be given to students before half-term. One aspect of the regulation with which I fully agree is that students in Years 8 and above now have ownership of their data, particularly where there is no public interest in processing their data. This applies specifically to the use of students’ photographs. The School will therefore be asking students to give their approval for the use of their image before half-term commences. Please do contact me if you have any questions.
Special Educational Needs Coordinator
I’m advertising for a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to lead our learning support department. Mrs Hyslop, who shares her time between us and other schools, is reducing her hours to go part-time at the end of this academic year and regrettably has decided that she cannot fulfil the role at Caistor any longer. Again, she has been an outstanding, dedicated colleague and I will write more at the end of term. Please take a look at the vacancies section of the website if you are interested in applying.
I do wish you all a very good and restful extended weekend. We’re back at School as normal on Tuesday.
