History Trip to Russia

Posted on 24th February 2014

The History Department ran a visit to Moscow and St. Petersburg from February 13th-18th, involving 30 students. The visit was designed to support the students with their AS and A2 courses, half of which centre on Russian history from 1801-1941. The first leg in Moscow included many memorable highlights, including a visit to the Kremlin and its magnificent Armoury Museum, containing the world famous Faberge eggs.

We also explored the Soviet metro system, discussed the importance of the Victory Park memorials, and enjoyed a ballet performance of Don Quixote at the Stanislavsky Theatre.

In St Petersburg, the trip took a more imperial theme, looking at the lives of the Russian tsars, and exploring the reasons for their demise. We toured the Cruiser Aurora, from where the first shots of the Russian Revolution were fired, revelled in the splendour of the Summer and Winter Palaces, and enjoyed a tour of the Yusopov Palace, where the plot to murder Rasputin was hatched. The trip was a great success, and the students were a credit to the school.

While in Russia Mr Hale posted a blog giving a brief insight into the trip. Read his blog here
