Our most important Night of the Year

Last Thursday 19th September we held our Annual Awards Evening in Caistor Parish Church.  We honoured those students who took their A levels and GCSEs this summer as well as students who achieved highly in other years in the School.  There were lots of prizes for effort too, and also many sports prizes and citizenship related awards.  Our Guest Speaker was Mrs Debbie Barnes, Director of Children’s Services, Lincolnshire County Council.  I am delighted to enclose a list of School prizewinners which I hope you will find of interest.  The evening was a very memorable one and was extremely well supported by both students and parents.  I am very grateful to everyone who took the trouble to join us.  As always, we are very grateful to the Friends of Caistor Grammar School for providing refreshments at the reception afterwards and to our local campanologists who summoned us to the Evening so memorably by ringing a quarter peal.

An opportunity to become a Parent Governor

The Governors have a vacancy for a Parent Governor.  We now seek nominations from parents who are prepared to serve a four year term and are willing to take on the role of Parent Governor.  Nominations should arrive with me by noon on Thursday 17th October 2013.

The Governing Body normally meets six times a year and Governors additionally serve on one of the three Committees, which meet about three or four times a year.  We hope candidates will also feel able to support the life of the school.  Anyone who is a parent of a student on the School roll is entitled to stand.  In this context ‘parent’ includes guardian.  A candidate must be proposed and seconded by other parents of students in the School.  Each candidate is also asked to submit a short personal statement of about 100 words explaining why he or she feels it appropriate to stand for election.  These statements will be circulated to parents with the ballot paper, should an election be necessary.

Elections to School and Sixth Form Councils

We recently had elections for the School Council and the Sixth Form Council.  I am very grateful to every student who put themselves forward to be elected by their peers and I am particularly proud of those students who won the trust of their peers and have been elected.  I list below those students who have been elected to the School Council and which form they are representing and those students who have been elected to the Sixth Form Council, which deals particularly with Sixth Form issues.  Our Senior Prefect Team and Secretaries to the School Council sit on both Councils and I list them as well.

A very successful Macmillan Coffee morning

Last Friday morning we held a very convivial Macmillan Coffee Morning, which raised over £630.  Great credit goes to our Year 11 students who organised the event under the direction of Mr Graham Dobson, Head of Upper School and to the Friends of Caistor Grammar School who once again provided excellent support.  I am also grateful to several Upper Sixth students who helped to run the event, Mrs Fran Thompson for organising our music and to the excellent players, as well as all those parents and students who provided cakes for us to sell.  Thanks to everyone involved!

A delightful Friends’ Year 7 Treasure Hunt

We had a really splendid Saturday afternoon at the annual Year 7 Treasure Hunt organised by the Friends of Caistor Grammar School.  Over 150 people attended and we all had a great time.  I am very grateful to the Friends for organising the event, to Mrs Amanda Gould for producing yet another sumptuous Tea, and to our Sixth Form students for first organising the Treasure Hunt itself (especially Matthew Walker) and then greeting and directing our guests (led by Antonia Feilden).

A warm welcome to our Chinese visitors

We are very pleased to welcome a party of Chinese students in the first leg of our annual exchange.  I am extremely proud of our relationship with the Tangshan Language School in China.  Every year, a good number of our Year 12 students get the chance to stay for a fortnight in Tangshan and act as International Ambassadors for the school for the year.  The following Autumn, they act as hosts to the same number of Chinese students visiting us.  I am grateful to our International Co-ordinator, Dr Dan Wilton, who has done a marvellous job once again in facilitating the whole trip.  We are also grateful to our sister school in this relationship, Christ’s Hospital School in Lincoln, and their Head Teacher, Dr Andy Wright and their long-standing International Co-ordinator, Mr Chris Williams.  The students whose families looked after our Chinese visitors need special praise and I am very grateful to them.

Much Ado Duke of Edinburgh

As I write, the Silver Assessed Duke of Edinburgh expedition is well under way.  This is the third weekend running that D of E students and staff/friends have been strutting their stuff over different parts of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.  The number of students successfully involved in our branch of the scheme is formidable and I am hugely grateful to all those who give up their time and share their expertise in this wonderful activity.  I am very especially grateful to Mrs Jo Hoare, who acts as our overall D of E Co-ordinator and who runs the Silver and Gold level.  I am also thankful to Mrs Louise Triggs who runs the Bronze section.  The following colleagues and friends are also very significant in our Scheme: Mr David Moffatt, Mrs Emma Marris, Mrs Jan Waite, Mrs Rosemary Hood, Mrs Monica Jacques, Dr Dan Wilton, Mr Norman Palmer, Mrs Angela Palmer, Mr Mick Hoare, Mr Chris Hoare, Mr Laurence Brown, Mrs Linda Patrick, Mr Philip Smith.  Students who have been successful in the Scheme in the last 12 months are listed in the pages of the attached Awards Evening programme.

A request for support for our School Fund

Our School Fund exists to support the many extra curricular activities in the life of the School and helps us to put on more events and subsidise them for students.  It also helps us to pay for teams’ transport.  We are very grateful indeed for the parental contributions we receive.  We now only ask once a year for this support.  In the past a contribution of about £5 per term helps us to achieve the amount we needed so a sum of £15 would be really appreciated but we are really grateful to be given any amount you deem appropriate.  This can be done more tax efficiently if you fill in the Gift Aid Declaration so we would really appreciate you doing that if at all possible.  As an Academy, we are able to re-claim tax on all donations made to our School Fund under a Gift Aid Declaration, as long as the donor is a tax payer, equal to the amount of tax deducted from their donations.  This means that if you pay tax at the basic rate of 20p in the £ we can reclaim 25p for every £1 you give us, so for every £15 donated we can reclaim another £3.75 from the Inland Revenue.

One Gift Aid Declaration can apply to all future donations indefinitely, as long as the donor remains a tax-payer.  All we need to do is to be able to identify the donor and the amount paid.

Friends of Caistor Grammar School AGM meeting – Wednesday 2ndOctober

The Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Caistor Grammar School will be held next Wednesday 2nd October at 7pm.  Everyone is invited to attend this meeting, particularly new parents to the school.  The school is very grateful to the volunteers of the Friends for the work they do throughout the year and extra helpers are always very welcome.  We are particularly keen to attract parents who have not previously supported the running of the Friends, since many of the previous committee are stepping down now that their children have left the School.  It is a great way of getting more involved and putting a little back into the School.

If you have visited our School website recently, you will be aware that we take lots of photographs at CGS and they adorn our walls as well.  We hope that students and their parents are proud to be seen carrying out their lives as CGS students but we are aware this can be a sensitive matter.  If you do not wish your child to be in any photographs on our walls or on our website, please will you notify the School Office of this and we will seek to ensure that they are not.
