The Magnificent Awards Evening Letter

Posted on 25th September 2014

A magnificent Awards Evening

Last Thursday 18th September, we held our annual Awards Evening in Caistor Parish Church.  It was a magnificent occasion which saw over 200 students receiving cups and prizes for their various distinctions and indeed all students who took their GCSE or A level examinations this summer were honoured.  Our Guest Speaker was Sir David Bell, who is currently Vice Chancellor of the University of Reading but who has previously been Head of Ofsted (HMCI of Schools) and Permanent Secretary for the Department of Education.  He delivered an inspiring speech which encouraged our students to make the most of their opportunities in life and to impress the notion of serving other people and developing all our talents.  I am very pleased to say that Sir David’s speech has been made available to us and can now be accessed on our School website.  The programme for the Evening was longer than ever before and contained a formidable range of achievements.  The full programme is also available on the School website but I am sending some selected pages from it to you attached to this letter.  Awards Evening always makes me feel proud of our School community: so many people have achieved so much and such great care and effort is made to recognise this.  I am very grateful to everyone who contributed to the Evening and especially to the Friends of Caistor Grammar School for providing refreshments afterwards.

Our Autumn Term has got off to a racing and busy start as you will see in our Calendar for the Year which has been issued to students.  Please have a good look at this since it includes the details of many events and activities which we hope you will come to support.  We have recently held our Information Evening for the parents of Year 11 students.  Today, there will be an Information Evening for Year 12 and an Information Evening for the parents of Year 10 on Tuesday 30th September.  Congratulations go to Thomas Mead (9Z) who won the under 14s category in the Yorkshire Schools’ Shooting Challenge.

An invitation to our Macmillan Coffee Morning

We are hosting two events this week which certainly deserve your support.  Year 11 are organising this year’s Macmillan Coffee morning on Friday 26th September from 10 – 12 and they have written an invitation as follows:  “Next Friday, a group of Year 11 students are running the School’s Annual Macmillan Coffee Morning in aid of the charity.  The coffee morning has had great success year on year and they would like this year to be no different.  There are ways to help other than coming along.  They especially need as many cakes, biscuits and other sweet delights donated as possible for the coffee morning to raise lots of money.  The coffee morning takes place on Friday 26th September between 10 and 12 and parents  are more than welcome to come around for a cup of tea.  A place to bring any donated cakes to on Friday morning is still to be confirmed but there will be a notice in the bulletin very shortly to confirm that location.”

Parents of students in Year 7 and the students themselves are warmly invited to our Year 7 Treasure Hunt on Saturday afternoon, 27th September, between 3 – 5pm and will include a delightful tea.  Thanks go to Mrs Amanda Gould, Catering Manager, for preparing the tea.

There are two other things you need to be aware of this week.  We will be taking a whole School photograph today and we expect all students to play their part in making this a memorable school event.  We are also having elections for our School and Sixth Form Councils on Thursday.  Good luck to all those students who put themselves forward.  I am hoping for a turnout that will be at least 84%!

An opportunity to become a Parent Governor

The Governors have a vacancy for a Parent Governor and we seek nominations.  The vacancy has arisen as a result of the retirement of Ms Rosanna McGlone.  We are grateful to her for her enthusiasm and commitment as a Governor during her term of office.  We now seek nominations from parents who are prepared to serve a four year term and are willing to take on the role of Parent Governor.  Nominations should arrive with me by noon on Wednesday 8th October 2014.

The Governing Body normally meets six times a year and Governors additionally serve on one of the three Committees, which meet between three and six times a year.  We hope candidates will also feel able to support the life of the School.  Anyone who is a parent of a student on the School roll is entitled to stand.  In this context ‘parent’ includes guardian.  A candidate must be proposed and seconded by other parents of students in the School.  Each candidate is also asked to submit a short personal statement of about 100 words explaining why he or she feels it appropriate to stand for election.  These statements will be circulated to parents with the ballot paper, should an election be necessary.

Parking and Safety

I have recently spoken to students to remind them of their need to be very careful on the way to and on the way from School, particularly if they use buses in the Market Place in Caistor.  The pathways are narrow and many vehicles travel through this busy area in the period before and after School.  Please do all you can to encourage your child to pay as much care and attention as possible.  I am pleased to report to you that the roadworks on North Kelsey Road have been completed and we are back to normal as far as bus positioning is concerned.

Please support the Friends of Caistor Grammar School

The Friends of Caistor Grammar School is an invaluable support to the life of the School in all sorts of ways.  It does raise money for the School but its main role is to support the life and work of the School.  We need new members on our Friends Committee and people who will be prepared to come forward and offer their service from time to time.  The Friends AGM is taking place at 7pm on Wednesday 8th October and we would very much like it if you would consider coming along and supporting it and, if possible, offering your services on the Committee.  If you want to discuss this then you could contact the Secretary of the Friends and our School Librarian, Mrs Katherine Jago, by ringing the School.

A request for support for our School Fund

Our School Fund exists to support the many extra curricular activities in the life of the School and helps us to put on more events and subsidise them for students.  It also helps us to pay for teams’ transport.  We are very grateful indeed for the parental contributions we receive.  We now only ask once a year for this support.  In the past a contribution of about £5 per term helps us to achieve the amount we needed so a sum of £15 would be really appreciated but we are really grateful to be given any amount you deem appropriate.  This can be done more tax efficiently if you fill in the Gift Aid Declaration so we would really appreciate you doing that if at all possible.  As an Academy, we are able to re-claim tax on all donations made to our School Fund under a Gift Aid Declaration, as long as the donor is a tax payer, equal to the amount of tax deducted from their donations.  This means that if you pay tax at the basic rate of 20p in the £ we can reclaim 25p for every £1 you give us, so for every £15 donated we can reclaim another £3.75 from the Inland Revenue.

If you feel able to set up a standing order to make a regular payment this would be greatly appreciated.  (If you elect to do this, please complete the relevant part of the reply slip attached and ask your bank to make payments to:  Caistor Grammar School Fund Managed Account, Lloyds TSB Bank plc, High Street Lincoln branch, PO Box 1000, BX1 1LT, Sort Code 30-95-05, Account Number 02548232).

One Gift Aid Declaration can apply to all future donations indefinitely, as long as the donor remains a tax-payer.  All we need to do is to be able to identify the donor and the amount paid.

Application for Free School Meals

Recently a letter was sent home requesting details with regard to Free School Meals.  Please can we have any completed forms returned to Mrs Buck by Tuesday 30th September at the latest.  The form can be downloaded from the School website if required.

Being photographed at Caistor Grammar School

If you have visited our School website recently, you will be aware that we take lots of photographs at CGS and they adorn our walls as well.  We hope that students and their parents are proud to be seen carrying out their lives as CGS students but we are aware this can be a sensitive matter.  If you do not wish your child to be in any photographs on our walls or on our website, please will you notify the School Office of this and we will seek to ensure that they are not.

With very best wishes

Yours sincerely
